Addigy - IT Management Software

Home Screen Setup for iOS and iPadOS

Role → Product Designer

Overview → I crafted the visual and interaction design of this feature, contributing code to enhance our UI.

This feature has been met with overwhelming positive feedback from the IT community.

An opportunity for experimenting.

Creating a great user experience for IT admins is essential. Addigy focuses on enabling admins to manage their devices via the web.

As part of the design team, I was responsible for the visual design, prototypes, and interaction design for this project.

01 Context

The problems of being an IT admin

Internal IT admins often find themselves in situations where device owners often can’t locate important apps on their home screens.

IT admins frequently face a recurring challenge: device owners can’t find important apps on their home screens, forcing IT to physically search for them.

How can we create an experience that lets users easily arrange their home screens while significantly reducing the manual workload for IT admins?

02 Problem

Organization Remotely

What if we could empower IT owners to organize their home screens themselves remotely? By designing a simple, intuitive interface, we can ensure essential apps are always visible, saving IT admins valuable time and reducing frustration.

03 Opportunity

04 Research

A familiar experience

We had with a clear goal: to design an experience that feels like organizing a device’s Home Screen.

After research and brainstorming, we recognized that the best approach was to create a drag-and-drop style, removing unnecessary clicks and complexity.

Our ideal solution included a device preview that made it feel as if the admin were crafting their Home Screen right there.

We wanted a UI that was intuitive, but above all, easy to use.

Research Collection

We conducted qualitative interviews with internal stakeholders where we show the prototype and explained the problem with its proposed solution.

Based on these methods, we discovered that the feature was more frequently used on larger devices, prompting us to adapt the UI to accommodate both small and large screen layouts.

After developing a working prototype in Sketch we shared it to gain internal feedback on this new feature. Feedback was collected and organized depending on must and nice to have. From there we iterated and started to finalize the design.

05 Design

The Visual Identity

Since this was a new UI, we had the freedom to experiment with its design. We aimed to create an experience similar to organizing apps on Apple devices, so we pursued a fun, intuitive drag-and-drop interface.

While staying true to Addigy’s design values, we incorporated multiple shades of blue to enhance the interactive area. Although we can’t control how app icons are designed, I wanted our UI to highlights their color and variety.

06 Review and Refine

Ideal Solution

Through reviews and feedback sessions with internal stakeholders and customers, I refined each iteration tailoring the experience to feel as intuitive as physically organizing a phone.

At the same time, I wanted admins have all options necessary to create a customized Home Screen for their end-users' devices.

Breaking down the UI

Let’s take a look at the functionality of the UI. We strived to implement as many features that were possible (at the time) when organizing an iPhone/iPad Home Screen.

Outcomes & Learning

I’m tremendously proud of Home Screen layout. It’s not often you get to create an engaging UI experience in the world of IT, so I wanted to make the most of this opportunity. It has become one of our most popular UIs and a real treat for showing customers what Addigy is all about.

Our results made a positive impact used in over 1000+ organizations hitting the nail on what we wanted to accomplish. It got us new clients within the education sector and proved to be an easy learning experience for admins.

In the future, I plan to expand this feature by adding widgets and enabling app tinting on iOS and iPadOS, which will give IT admins more controls over their devices.
