Remote HomeScreen

Overview

I crafted the visual and interaction design of this feature, contributing code to enhance our UI.

This feature has been met with overwhelming positive feedback from the IT community.

01 Context

An opportunity for experimenting.

Creating a great user experience for IT admins is essential. Addigy focuses on enabling admins to manage their devices via the web.

As part of the design team, I was responsible for the visual design, prototypes, and interaction design for this project.

02 Problem

The problems of being an IT admin

Ensure essential apps are always visible, by allowing IT admins to organize screens remotely

Opportunity

Saves IT admins time by organizing devices remotely and at scale, eliminating the need for manual, physical setup.

Time Saving

Difficulties Arise

IT admins frequently face a recurring challenge: device owners can’t find important apps forcing admins to physically or virtually help search for them.

03 Research

A familiar experience

Public schools in the United States reported providing laptops or tablets to their students

94%

Physicians in the United States use either an iPad or iPhone

75%

Organizations are actively using iPhones and iPads

56%

Without an MDM, manually arranging the Home Screen on each device could take several minutes per device

5–10 minutes or more

After research and brainstorming, we recognized that the best approach was to create a drag and drop style that resemble as if the admin was physically organizing the phone.

Full Prototype

We conducted qualitative interviews with internal stakeholders where we show the prototype and explained the problem with its proposed solution.

Based on this, we discovered that the feature was more frequently used on larger devices, prompting us to adapt the UI to accommodate both small and large screen layouts. After developing a working prototype in Sketch we shared it to gain internal feedback on this new feature.

04 Design

The Visual Identity

We aimed to create an experience similar to organizing apps on Apple devices, so we pursued a fun, intuitive drag-and-drop interface.

05 Solution

Powerful Tool

Through reviews and feedback sessions with internal stakeholders and customers, I refined each iteration tailoring the experience to feel as intuitive as physically organizing a phone.

Powerful

& Hands Free

The UI allows users to filter compatible apps per device and switch between iPhone & iPad layouts.

Users can create folders for better organization, with the ability to add multiple pages for seamless navigation.

See apps exactly as they’ll appear on user devices. Admins can remove apps and customize their dock, which updates based on the device they’re using.

Users can create and name folders just like in iOS/iPadOS. When folders fill up, new pages are added automatically to fit more apps.

Outcomes & Learnings

I’m tremendously proud of Home Screen layout. It’s not often you get to create an engaging UI experience in the world of IT, so I wanted to make the most of this opportunity. It has become one of our most popular UIs and a real treat for showing customers what Addigy is all about.

Our results made a positive impact used in over 1000+ organizations hitting the nail on what we wanted to accomplish. It got us new clients within the education sector and proved to be an easy learning experience for admins.

In the future, I plan to expand this feature by adding widgets and enabling app tinting on iOS and iPadOS, which will give IT admins more controls over their devices.

A couple of the icons used. The majority of color from this UI comes from the variety of app icons admins can see.
